The How-To’s of Manual Expression

1. Wash your hands and gather a clean collection container. A wide-mouth cup strategically placed in front of the nipple will catch your milk as it squirts. Some mothers place a funnel inside a baby bottle to collect their milk.

2. Gently massage your breasts. Use small circular motions as if you’re conducting a breast self-exam, or do whatever feels comfortable. Start on the outside of the breast and move toward the areola. Bend over at the waist and let gravity assist you. The key is to relax and allow letdown to occur. Warm washcloths applied to the breast will also help.

3. Place your thumb and first two fingers about one inch behind the nipple or on the edge of the areola in a twelve o’clock and six o’clock position. Your fingers will resemble the letter C.

4. Lift your breast and push it back toward your ribcage.

5. Press down toward the nipple in a gently rolling motion to compress milk out of the sinuses, the way your baby does when she nurses. Don’t squeeze the nipple, just the sinuses under the areola. Release your hold and do this again.

6. When milk begins to slow, rotate your hand position around the breast (i.e., eleven and five o’clock) and continue until the sinuses are empty. Work all sides of the breast until milk no longer flows or drips.

7. Rub excess milk onto your nipple and areola.
